Introducing European-American University

The Information Age offers us possibly the greatest opportunity in history to remodel higher education so that it truly meets the challenges of the 21st century. In the past decade, universities have had to wake up to the fact that they are competing for customers in a crowded market, and those customers have become increasingly informed as to their options. In addition, the internet has introduced the possibility of wholly private sector institutions which, because they are not hamstrung by state regulation and are free from the costs and constraints of the traditional campus, have been able to meet market need with increased efficiency.

In 2007, a new private online university launched to the public with the aim of offering non-traditional education within a spiritual context and at an affordable cost. As a key part of its outlook, European-American University is free from government control and intervention, and consciously radical in its approach. Its educational methodology, advanced for decades by distinguished writers and thinkers, places the student, rather than the educational establishment, first, and removes the barriers to the recognition of meaningful learning that has occurred at any time and in any place.

How it works

EAU is a fully online, fully private institution owned and controlled by the Society for Humanistic Potential, an interfaith religious organization. It offers degree programs at the bachelor's, master's and doctoral levels in many fields, including the possibility to design a program around your own needs and to study in areas not offered by traditional universities. EAU is a university without walls, and enrols students from many different countries who complete their programs by correspondence and online learning, with no campus attendance required at any stage. Methods of assessment are primarily those of portfolio, written paper, project and dissertation, with no traditional exams to complete.

EAU is aimed at experienced working or retired adults who want the freedom to pursue an individualized program and for whom a private sector educational solution is appropriate. It does not impose time limits for completion; nor does it require students to enrol for a set period. However, most students will spend at least a year in the program before completing. Where existing work has been done, it can be applied for credit towards the degree award with no need to repeat what has already been covered.

Tuition fees at EAU are among the most affordable of any legitimate institution. This reflects the cost savings of not operating a campus and not having to cover the costs of the government education system, with these savings being passed on to the student.
